Why are my hazard perception skills being
tested?
In November 2002 the DSA introduced a
Hazard Perception element to all theory tests. It is one of a
series of measures aimed at reducing the number of people killed or
injured on Britain’s road by 40% by 2010.
Young drivers (17-21) make
up only 7% of all licence holders yet are involved in up to 1 in 7
(15%) of accidents involving injury. One in five newly qualified
drivers has a crash within a year. This is the reason why it is
expensive for newly qualified driver and riders to obtain vehicle
insurance.
Obviously, an element of
these figures can be attributed to lack of experience. Better
training and testing (such as Hazard Perception) is seen as one way
forward.
