Spotting the clues

Checking Mirrors - www.theory-online.co.ukExperienced drivers and riders are always looking for clues to help them spot potential hazards. Practice scanning the road and keep asking yourself ‘What if…?”. Here are some examples of things to look for and questions to ask.

  • A temporary road sign indicating road works ahead. What if there are workmen in the road ahead?
  • A parked car on your side of the road with its brake lights on. Has the driver seen you? What if he moves away without checking properly?
  • A school bus pulled up on the left. What if a child steps out from behind it?
  • A road sign indicating a sharp bend to the left. What if there is a broken down vehicle just around the corner?
  • A teenager using a mobile phone and approaching a pedestrian crossing. What if they don’t check properly before stepping out?

Potentially there are a virtually limitless amount of clues and scenarios that you could encounter. This is why it is important to keep scanning all around for clues and to anticipate potential problems by repeatedly asking yourself ‘What if…?’
